Abstract :

In the present scenario, many buildings are asymmetric in plan and/or in elevation based on the distribution of mass and stiffness along with each story throughout the height of the building. Most recent earthquakes show that the irregular distribution of mass, stiffness, and strengths may cause serious damage in structural systems. Due to several reasons, damage reports on recent earthquakes have indicated that torsional motions often cause significant damage to buildings, at times leading to their collapse. The earthquake resistance code in India, IS1893:2002 (Part I) is used for asymmetric buildings. In this study, an attempt has been made to study the torsional provisions as per IS code. Several studies of structural damage during the past earthquake reveal that torsion is the most critical factor leading to major damage or complete collapse of buildings; therefore, it is necessary that symmetric buildings should also be analyzed for torsion. Structures are never perfectly regular and hence the designers routinely need to evaluate the likely degree of irregularity and the effect of this irregularity on a structure during an earthquake. In this work, a study on the influence of the torsion effects on the behavior of the structure is done by response spectrum analysis (Dynamic Analysis) using ETABS Software. It is observed from the comparison of different building the eccentricities between the center of mass and center of resistance plays a vital role in torsional behavior of structure during an earthquake. Thus, there is a requirement to study the effect of torsion on different irregular building considering different sesmic parameters.
