Abstract :

Fins, extended surfaces designed to enhance heat transfer in fluid flow, are the focus of this research. The study involves a comparative analysis of fluid flow behavior and heat transfer characteristics over straight and twisted square fins. Thermo-physical properties of fluid flow were analyzed using a 3D model developed with the CFD module Ansys 2024 R1 Student. Both straight and twisted fins were modeled with aluminum as the material and placed in a rectangular enclosure with air as the fluid domain. The simulation, conducted under identical input conditions, aimed to assess the impact of twist on fluid properties and heat transfer rates. Comparative results revealed that twisted fins improved heat transfer rates at the expense of an increased pressure drop due to turbulence induced by the fin twist, in contrast to straight fins. CFD analysis results, presented through various contours including velocity, pressure, turbulence, and temperature, further illustrated these findings.
